EU: Schoenherr acts as consortium leader in two projects addressing the implementation of the Renewable Energy Directive

The Central European law firm Schoenherr acted as Consortium Leader for a project assisting the Directorate General for Energy in its assessment of the Renewable Energy Directive’s implementation in the national legislation of all 27 EU member states. Schoenherr has recently been appointed to take on the same role in a follow-up project addressing the Directive’s transposition in the national legislation of 15 selected member states.

On the finalised project ‘Renewable Energy Best Practice and Implementation of the national Action Plans in the EU 27 Member States’

The Consortium headed-up by Schoenherr and comprising AF-Mercados EMI, CE Delft, Thomson Reuters Point Carbon, and Ecologic Institute has successfully finalised the project ‘Renewable Energy Best Practice and Implementation of the national Action Plans in the EU 27 Member States’. This project assists the European Commission / Directorate General for Energy in a holistic assessment of the implementation of the Renewable Energy Directive into the national legislation of the EU-27 member states.

The project’s reports will serve as a starting point for the Commission to evaluate the necessity of initiating infringement procedures against those member states that have not yet fully transposed the Directive.

The Consortium team consisted of 54 energy experts and lawyers from across Europe and was headed-up by Markus Piuk and Raluca Dirjan (Schoenherr), while Bernd Rajal and Andreas Orator were responsible for the coordination of the Schoenherr team in Austria and CEE.

On the new project ‘Progress in Renewable Energy and Sustainability of Biofu-els, and the Transposition of the Renewable Energy Directive’

Schoenherr (as Consortium leader), together with AF-Mercados EMI, CE Delft and Ecologic Institute, have recently been appointed on a second consecutive mandate to act for the Directorate General for Energy, namely on the follow up to the project ‘Renewable Energy Best Practice’. This new project advises the Directorate on the transposition of the Renewable Energy Directive into the national legislation of 15 member states selected by the Commission (Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain).

The project is designed to help the Commission and the Directorate in assessing the implementation of the Directive with the view to initiating infringement procedures against those member states that have not yet fully transposed the Directive.

The Consortium team will consist of 30 energy experts and lawyers from across these member states, and will be headed-up by Bernd Rajal and Raluca Dirjan.
