Schoenherr advised GROPYUS, the Vienna-headquartered technology-based construction company, on its latest EUR 100m financing round, bringing the company's total received investments to around EUR 400m since its founding in 2019. According to public information, this is the largest venture capital financing round in Austria in 2026 to date and marks GROPYUS' third successive EUR 100m round.
In this financing round, GROPYUS secured capital from existing investors Vonovia – Germany's largest residential real estate company – and Semapa Next, which is owned by Semapa Group, a leading Portuguese investment holding company with a presence on four continents and listed on the Portuguese PSI stock index. Semapa Next is now the second-largest investor after Vonovia. Newly joining this round is the pension fund of the US state of Michigan. The funds will be used to expand GROPYUS' digital and automated planning and construction processes, as well as to further develop the technology of its platform.
"GROPYUS is an outstanding example of Austrian deep-tech innovation that is reshaping an entire industry. We are proud to have been at GROPYUS' side from the very beginning and through every financing milestone," said Thomas Kulnigg. "This third successive EUR 100m round is a remarkable achievement and a strong signal of investor confidence in GROPYUS' technology and vision."
"It has been a privilege to accompany GROPYUS on its journey from a Vienna-based start-up to one of the most ambitious proptech companies," added Niklas Kerschbaumer. "This latest round is a testament to the strength of GROPYUS' business model and the continued trust of its investors."
GROPYUS was founded in 2019 and is at the forefront of transforming the residential market by creating sustainable, affordable and smart living solutions. The company specialises in building innovative multi-storey residential buildings using timber-construction methods. This approach not only addresses the housing shortage but also contributes positively to the environment. GROPYUS operates a fully automated production facility in Richen (Baden-Württemberg, Germany), where wall and slab elements are largely pre-produced with the help of 50 robots, then delivered to the construction site and assembled. The company's fully integrated and digitalised end-to-end process allows for the efficient production of high-quality buildings at reduced cost and construction time.
Schoenherr's venture capital team, led by Thomas Kulnigg and Niklas Kerschbaumer, has been advising GROPYUS comprehensively as company counsel since its founding in 2019. The team has played a crucial role in guiding GROPYUS through all of its financing rounds, ensuring the company's continued growth and success.
The Schoenherr team advising GROPYUS on this financing round was led by Thomas Kulnigg (Partner) and Niklas Kerschbaumer (Attorney at Law) and included Alexander Giehser (Associate).
