Schoenherr CEE Compass 2026

7 May 2026 in Bucharest

Join us for the third edition of the Schoenherr CEE Compass, navigating the most pressing topics in law, business and society.

The half-day conference on Thursday, 7 May 2026 in Bucharest will addresses one of the most significant economic and humanitarian challenges of our time: Ukraine's post-war reconstruction. As the global community mobilises around Ukraine's recovery, businesses worldwide, whether experienced in post-conflict environments or new to the region, are uniquely positioned to play a transformative role in shaping the country's future.

The conference aims to explore how the global and local business community can contribute to and benefit from Ukraine's rebuilding. It will further examine the role of Central and Eastern European countries, which bring invaluable expertise from their own experience of post-conflict transformation and EU integration, while also drawing on lessons from reconstruction efforts in other regions worldwide.

The conference will convene Schoenherr lawyers with decision-makers and thought leaders to explore critical international developments shaping Ukraine's reconstruction. Attendees will gain actionable insights into navigating the complex business, legal, regulatory, and financial landscape of reconstruction, whether they are CEE-based companies, global corporations, or organisations with prior experience in post-war investment environments.

12:00 – 12:45 | Registration & Light Welcome Lunch

12:45 | Welcome & Opening Remarks

13:00 | Panel 1

Post-war Ukraine: landscape, opportunities, and the road ahead
This opening panel takes stock of where Ukraine stands today and what its post-war trajectory is likely to look like. Panellists will assess the scale and scope of reconstruction needs across key sectors, identify the opportunities this creates for private investors and businesses, and address the risks and uncertainties that remain. The discussion will also examine the current state of Ukraine's legal and regulatory framework, highlighting the gaps that will need to be addressed to create a stable and predictable environment for investment, and the legislative reforms already under way or anticipated as part of Ukraine's EU accession process.

13:00 | Panel 2

Investing in recovery: lessons from the field and pathways for the private sector
This panel brings together businesses currently active in Ukraine and organisations with hands-on exposure to reconstruction investment in other regions, to draw out practical lessons and translate them into actionable guidance. Panellists will discuss how companies have structured their market entry, managed operational and legal risk, engaged with local partners and public authorities, and adapted their business models to the specific demands of post-war environments. The session is designed to give attendees a grounded view of what private sector engagement in Ukraine's recovery can realistically look like.

14:30 – 14:45 | Coffee Break

14:45 | Panel 3

Infrastructure and energy: the foundation of reconstruction
This panel focuses on two of the most critical sectors for Ukraine's recovery: infrastructure – including transport, roads, bridges, and urban systems – and energy, encompassing power generation, grid rehabilitation, and the transition towards sustainable energy sources. Panellists will discuss the current state of these sectors, the scale of investment required, and the frameworks, both contractual and regulatory, through which private companies can participate. The session will also address the intersection of reconstruction with Ukraine's longer-term EU integration objectives and green energy commitments.

15:30 | Panel 4

Private equity in Ukraine: where capital is being deployed
This panel convenes fund managers and private equity investors who are either active in Ukraine or have publicly announced investment plans tied to the country's recovery, to provide a transparent account of where capital is being directed, which sectors are attracting attention, and what return profiles and risk frameworks are being applied. For Ukrainian companies and businesses considering engagement with private equity, the session offers a direct line of sight into investor priorities and the types of partnerships and structures that funds are prepared to consider.

16:15 | Panel 5

Financing reconstruction: structures and lender priorities
This panel brings together representatives from international financial institutions and commercial banks to discuss their respective roles in supporting Ukraine's recovery. Topics will include the financing instruments and programmes currently available, the sectors prioritised for lending, bankability criteria applied to reconstruction projects, and the conditions under which commercial financing can complement or co-exist with IFI-backed support. The session will give private sector participants a clearer understanding of how to structure projects and approach lenders in the context of reconstruction financing.

17:00 | Closing remarks

17:15 – 18:30 | Snack, drinks & networking
